Es gibt diverse Aufrufe zur Unterstützung lokal ansässiger Bürger-Initiativen, die sich einem enormen Druck ausgesetzt sehen und immer mehr Schwierigkeiten haben, ihre bisherige Arbeit fortzusetzen.

Ausgehend von kritischen Erfahrungsberichten einer Vielzahl Studierender, die aus dem nicht-deutschsprachigen Ausland zu uns an die Hochschule gekommen sind, wollen wir uns mit der Frage auseinandersetzen, ob und wie die BURG auf Anforderungen, die daraus erwachsen, reagiert. Was bedeutet es, wenn eine Hochschule sich als “Weltoffene Hochschule” positioniert? Wie wird Interkulturalität wirklich gelebt, welche Formen einer Willkommenskultur gibt es und an welchen Stellen gibt es Handlungsbedarf? Wie gehen wir als Hochschule mit Benachteiligung um, mit Rassismus und verbalen und physischen Übergriffen? Wir als sozial und politisch engagierte Studierende, Lehrende und Mitarbeitende wollen in der eigenen Institution dafür sorgen, daß der Anspruch, den wir proklamieren, in unseren Seminarräumen, auf den Fluren, während Veranstaltungen, auf den Webseiten der BURG und in der Kommunikation wirklich gelebt wird. Gemeinsam mit Studierenden, dem StuRa, dem International Office, dem Studiendezernat, der Gleichstellungsstelle und der AG Internationalisierung wollen wir möglichst schnell in’s Handeln kommen. Wir wollen entwerfen und gestalten: Prototypen, kleine Maßnahmen und langfristige Strukturen, schnelle Drucksachen und informative Webseiten oder aber auch geschützte Gesprächssituationen und Möglichkeiten persönlichen Wissensaustausch.

Wie kann Gestaltung auf Dinge hinweisen, die mal waren, aber nicht mehr hier sind? Entlang von konkreten Beispielen testen wir Darstellungsmethoden für sich verändernde Zustände und Verschwinden als Ausgangspunkt für Abbilden. Nicht selte übernimmt Kommuniaktionsdesign die Rolle des Sichtbarmachens komplexer Sachverhalte; Nutzt Medien als Stellvertreter für Inhalte und Fragestellungen die andernorts verhandelt oder entschieden werden. Bezieht sich generell auf ein Abwesendes.

Im Rahmen des Grundlagenkurses untersuchen wir Handungsmodi die besondere Formen des Anwesenden sichtbar machen. Und dabei auch die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Fragen des Abbildens und Darstellens untersuchen. Hierbei geht es nicht um Schilder und Plaketten, sondern die Frage, wie auch gemeinsames Handeln und Positionierung im Raum Erinnern performt. Schilder und Statuen können helfen, das zu ermöglichen, doch immer geht es um ein soziales Miteinander und ein Aushandeln dessen, was erinnerungswürdig ist.

In the context of asylum cases in the EU, mechanisms of law remain ambiguous in their language, structure and logic. My approach is an attempt to represent the law beyond its textual facade, while raising critical questions on the court procedures and its decisions making process in asylum cases. Can data maps offer a hybrid medium for countering legal procedures or for elaborating fragments of legal double standards? Do arbitrary decisions exist in the legal mind? What roles can data maps play in investigative journalism and legal activism? Can data maps frame critical patterns in legal decision-making?

ABSTRACT

Wie kann in Gruppen gestaltet werden? Welche Werkzeuge und Methoden helfen dabei gemeinsam Ideen zu entwickeln? Wie unterscheidet sich das Entwerfen und Gestalten als Individuum vom gemeinsamen und kollektiven Arbeiten? Welche Werkzeuge helfen dabei zusammen zu entwerfen? In den beiden Grundlagenwochen wollen wir uns der Frage nach Formaten und Methoden des kollektiven Gestaltens widmen. Wir werden gemeinsam mit dem Kollektiv criticalform vier Orte kennenlernen an denen das Kollektiv aktuell arbeitet und unter dem Titel “Solidarische Design Stationen” Orte schafft an denen Gestaltung mit Menschen verschiedener sozialer Hintergründe und mit ganz verschiedenen Problemdefinitionen entwickelt werden. Diese Orte sind: 1. Ein Streetwork Verein, 2. Eine Erstaufnahmeeinrichtung für Geflüchtete 3. Eine Einrichtung in der Jugendliche aus Roma* Hintergrund nach der Schule Zeit verbringen und 4. ein Begegnungzentrum in einer ehemaligen DDR Funktionärswohnblocksiedlung. Nach einem ersten Übverblick über kollektive Entwurfs und Arbeitspraxen und Methoden werden wir selbst Toolboxen für gemeinsames Gestalten zu entwickeln.

Was sind Modi von Kommunikationsdesign und Gestaltung? Was wollen wir (SI) damit? Welche Rolle spielt Kommunikationsdesign in gesellschaftlichen und politischen Kontexten? The violent illegal pushbacks along the EU’s external border between Greece and Turkey are structurally embedded and routine, but take place far from the public eye. State and Quasi-State actors (civilian yet acting as border guard entities) apply pushback protocols against international law for more than a decade, with numbers varying vastly. Between 2013 and 2017, UNHCR recorded 350 pushbacks at sea and on land involving 11,500 persons, 7,500 of which were expelled from the Evros land border.

NGOs such as Mare Liberum, Human Rights Watch and ECCHR collect and structure data, reports, witness statements and testimonies to form public awareness and political momentum around this illegal state operation.

For asylum seekers, the violent and brutal practice of pushback forms an unpredictable and life-threatening obstacle before reaching infrastructures to proceed with applying for and receiving asylum. Human rights lawyer and researcher Niamh Keady-Tabbal writes: “Often, it seems like the two countries are playing a violent game of ping-pong across the Aegean with migrant bodies.”

This quote was the starting point to make the mechanisms of pushbacks tangible in an unfair and frustrating board game.

As a reflection on narrations in the context of migration history, Martina Böse1 started her essay Ich entscheide mich dafür, MigrantInnen zu sagen. Zur Vermittlung von Gegenerzählungen und Repräsentationspolitik in der Ausstellung gastarbajteri—40 Jahre Arbeitsmigration 2, with analytical comparisons between
General Narratives and Counter-Narratives [Fig.1], as methodologies of narrating the history of migration. Her approach states that the discursive networking of stories from different points of view, formulates how the public receives migration movements and migratory practices. Furthermore, the essay questions the authority to narrate counterstories and represent existing knowledge. Stating that the process of discursive
networking in this context is associated with archival institutions, scholars and researchers in the field of migration studies.

In 2019, 1% of the global population were displaced. Almost half of those (48%) were female (see UNHCR Global Trends 2019)

The NGO Rolling Save Space (ROSA) was founded in early 2021. It is a non-profit organisation using a converted truck to provide a safe space for women fleeing. Since March 8, 2022, the Rolling Safespace has been at its first location: the Attica peninsula in Greece. Here, three refugee accommodations north of Athens are regularly approached: Ritsona, Malakasa and Oinofyta. Approximately 3,500 people live there.

Specifically, a space for exchange and mutual support has been created in the immediate vicinity of the camps. Within the framework of discussion groups, topics can be shared for which there is often no space (e.g. questions about the body). Basic medical care and pregnancy counselling are offered by midwives and doctors in a separate treatment room in the truck. Urgently needed hygiene items are also handed out here. ROSA also organises a variety of sports and exercise programmes. At the same time, childcare is provided so that women have the opportunity to take advantage of these offers.

On October 9, 2019, an anti-Semitic, racist and anti-feminist assailant in Halle an der Saale attacked the city’s synagogue on the highest Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur. He tried to gain access to the building, failed and later killed two individuals and tried to specifically murder migrant-read people. The perpetrator has now been legally sentenced to the maximum penalty after 26 days of trial, and yet many relevant questions remain unanswered: Did the court grasp the political scope of the attack and its structural reasons? What role does the single perpetrator theory play in negating structural discrimination? How widespread are the perpetrator’s ideologies? In which social networks was he able to radicalise himself? How must the crime be embedded in an overall social context of a racist, anti-Semitic and sexist normal state in order to make the breeding ground for right-wing extremist acts of violence understandable?

The protocols were written and edited by the activist group DEMOC on their own as in german law court cases are not being protocoled or recorded for the public traditionally. Even though the Halle Trial was recorded for historic relevance it is not open to the public for another 30 years past sentencing.

ABSTRACT

In January 2020, the German Government decided to promote a renewable energy policy while phasing out coal-based energy production until 2038, announcing an investment of 40 billion Euros for transformations and structural changes. Through the replacement of coal infrastructure, livelihoods are being transformed and whole industries are facing intense changes. Power plants and mines are being shut down, settlements lose their site-specific functions, and jobs in the field change or lose meaning. The resulting transformations show effects from industry and work environments down to the family and individual level. After the German reunification, the former GDR region “Mitteldeutschland” already underwent severe changes, most of which did not play out well for local economies and traditional industries. This generated a high distrust among residents for vast transformation dynamics (Treuhand Trauma). Many young people leave the areas to find work and find their future elsewhere. The former coal region is one of Germany's most rapidly depopulating zones.
Simultaneously, new networks emerge on a civic level. People make use of low-cost spaces, engage and create new micro-economies, cultural production zones and collective practices. Yet those small-scale initiatives and networks are oftentimes not made part of the government planning and related funding.

ABSTRACT

The trial of the assassin of the attack 09 October 2019 took place from July to December 2020 at the Naumburg Higher Regional Court in the premises of the Magdeburg Regional Court. Involving over forty joint plaintiffs and more than eighty witnesses and experts, one of the biggest trials against a right-wing terrorist in Germany’s history was held in 2020. After twenty-six days, the trial ended with a life sentence being handed down to the perpetrator.
The case was accompanied by the biggest collective of co-plaintiffs, 45 people, in German court history.
One explicit demand by the network of co-plaintiffs was not to show the perpetrator and not to mention his name in the media – to avoid heroisation and iconisation in right-wing media. Some news outlets followed this demand, others did not. Observers of the trial and co-plaintiffs described the function of the court also as being a platform to ask for context on anti-Semitic, racist, and misogynist violence instead of personal guilt.

In large parts of the public opinion in Halle (Saale), the anti-Semitic, racist, and misogynist attack of Oct. 9th, 2019, which cost two people their lives and left 62 people pleading for attempted murder, is understood as a terrible act of a mentally disturbed, socially isolated lone perpetrator.

Investigating authorities, media coverage and the reasoning of Oberlandesgericht’s evaluation of the case co- and reproduce the narrative of the isolated case and “Einzeltätermythos”. Co-plaintiffs and activists in the field criticise the lacking contextualization of the attack as one link in a chain of violent anti-Semitic, racist and anti-feminist attacks and assaults in Germany and worldwide.

The Southern Border of the EU, consisting mainly of the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the most lethal border regions on the globe right now. In 2016 more than 5000 people drowned there. Until then the number barely dropped below 2000 people dying per year until 2020. For years people attempt crossing the Mediterranean with improvised and insufficient watercrafts, oftentimes losing orientation, being robbed of motors and fuel or finding themselves pushed back by FRONTEX allies. Civilian Sea Rescue NGOs have been active for years in developing protocols to prevent casualties.

At the same time, the Mediterranean Sea is a logistical hub and intersection of cultures, commercial traffic and markets. The project aims at reflecting both realities in parallel by enabling private merchant vessels to engage in this politically produced humanitarian crisis.

In Eastern Turkey, currently and over the course of the 20th century, more and more mining and the extraction of minerals have had dramatic effects on land usage, ownership and traditional livelihood in the region. Few corporations monopolise land and natural resources, farmers are displaced, local networks of family, social and economic traditions and practices suffer irritation and erosion. Chemicals used in the process of big-scale mining form a threat to agriculture and healthy fresh water supply.
Local networks organise resistance and practices to face the problems related to industrial mining, yet most of their activities are relatively connected to specific locations and not being transferred to the affected region.

Founded in 1915, the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle, with its two faculties of art and design, offers an unmistakable profile throughout Germany with excellent educational and study conditions. With over 1,000 students, it is one of the largest art academies in Germany. Visionary thinking and design are promoted in more than 20 fields of study, as is the development of practical professional skills. The university has excellently equipped studios and workshops and is networked with numerous research institutions, institutions and companies. In the more than 100 years of its existence, the BURG has developed into an art college that explores the tension between practice and research. Thinking and working across genres is also encouraged from the very beginning of the course of study by a broad-based basic education. ABSTRACT

The crimes against the Kurdish minority in the 1980s and 1990s have been sadly up-to-date again when the peace talks between the PKK and the Turkish state ended in 2015. Diyarbakir is a city of millions that faced a range of urban transformations related to the Kurdish-Turkish conflict at that time. During the clashes between the Turkish state and the youth organisation YDG-H, several months of curfews were proclaimed in the old town district Sur. The use of heavy artillery intensified the fighting within a very short time, leading to the death of several civilians and massive damage to one of the oldest cities in the world. When the military operation officially ended in March 2016, the government implemented a so-called „urgent expropriation“, whereby almost the entire old town became the property of the Turkish government. Since then, about half of the old town has been demolished to commercialise lots for housing unaffordable for Sur‘s over 20,000 displaced residents.

ABSTRACT

In an anarcho-capitalist manifesto presented at the 2016 World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Berlin, architect Patrik Schumacher, principal of Zaha Hadid Studio, argues for the complete withdrawal of state control regarding all matters of architecture and urban planning. The 8-point manifesto calls for “2. [...] abolishment of all land use prescriptions [...] until the right balance with work and entertainment spaces is discovered. Only the market has a chance to calibrate this intricate balance. 3. Stop all vain and unproductive ‘milieu protection’.” And to furthermore “8. Privatise all streets, squares, public spaces and parks, possibly whole urban districts.” In an interview with architect Arno Brandlhuber in Arch+ Property Issue 2018, Schumacher argues for the privatisation of everything to be a way of becoming Superhuman by hyper-density, hyper-mobilisation and acceleration.

In a response to this conversation, architectural scholar Manuel Shvartzberg Carrió claimed the racist, exclusivist underpinnings of the anarcho-capitalist manifesto by naturalising oppressive, exploitative, violent and sexist historical concepts.

ABSTRACT

The LEJ GUIDE visualises the operations that take place at the Leipzig/Halle Airport and run invisibly and parallelly to civil transport. Aiming at creating a new visual layer of representation of a hidden infrastructural aspect of the space.
Operations such as deportation, military use as well as displacements in local settlements due to air-traffic-related building activity are made visible within an augmented reality app that can be used while taking part in the official guided tour organised by the airport authorities. Additionally, there is an embedded Google Earth map available through the app, which provides detailed information about legal actions against the airport by local initiatives. Also, additional documents by the European Commission and further texts and background information about these processes are made available through the website.

ABSTRACT

Gecekondu – (Plural: Gecekondular) a Turkish expression meaning informal, oftentimes improvised built matter and quick building process – are frequently a result of previously forced disappropriation. During the 1960s and 70s, while the urban development of Istanbul was on the rise, more and more Gecekondular settlements developed and were quickly demolished. Nevertheless, until today they are an integral practice of a social and spatialized resistance movement in Turkey. Turkish law gave way to some organisational methods to turn temporary buildings into permanent settlements – yet also acted forcefully against such attempts by minor players in urban development.

ABSTRACT

On March 11, 2012, eleven workers died due to a fire in their accommodation at the large construction site of the Marmara Park Shopping Center in Istanbul. Crime scene specialists from the police determined that probably electric heaters had triggered a short circuit. The workers were doomed by their nylon tents, which were easily flammable, too close together and had only one exit each. It was sheer luck that the fire did not spread to four other workers’ tents. Just after the fire, the official line of accountability was shifted by the responsible construction company. The jurisdictional investigation around the workers’ deaths was followed by a court verdict that awarded the blame to sub-subcontractors of the German Company ECE Group. ECE Group was acquitted after filing a lawsuit to the Supreme Court. MAD Istanbul, an NGO concerned with urban rights and jurisdiction, aimed at problematizing the shift of responsibility zones and questioned the neutrality of the court verdict.

ABSTRACT

The destruction of the Roboski monument, erected in 2013 in Diyarbakır, Anatolia to commemorate 34 civilians of Kurdish origin who were victims of a deliberate air strike by the Turkish military in December 2011, is seen as symptomatic of a policy of repression against the Kurdish population.
The Turkish-Kurdish conflict is deep-rooted and ongoing. Kemalist ideology, a cornerstone of the modern Turkish nation-state strives for a homogenous state and for assimilation, respectively non-recognition of the culture of the Kurdish population. Kurds have been resisting state-driven violence and oppression continuously. There is a range of Kurdish monuments which have been forcefully removed by the Turkish government. Several more cases of military attacks, repression and human rights violations are not even being memorised in public space.

ABSTRACT

“Worldwide, almost one third (30%) of women who have been in a relationship report that they have experienced some form of physical and/or sexual violence by their intimate partner in their lifetime.” This figure shows that domestic abuse is not a random event that can strike anyone, for no reason. It is not a punctual incident and it is linked to a culture that undermines, belittles and devalues women.
According to the Global Peace Index, Norway is one of the safest countries in the world and among the wealthiest. It is, however, not the safest for women. From 2000 to 2010, 83 women were murdered by their partner or ex-partner. 7 out of 10 rapes are committed in private homes. Every year more than 3,000 women and 2,000 children spend the night in a shelter. A number of studies on domestic violence against women and children in Norway indicate that such violence is far more widespread than initially thought. Astrada.
